Debt Arrangement Scheme (D.A.S.)
Most of us have debt. It is a fact of modern life. Many people, however, find themselves in debt, which they find difficult to repay at certain times but the sooner you seek advice the better.
The Debt Arrangement Scheme (DAS) gives you both help and the time to pay your debts. All you need is some surplus income.
D.A.S. Offers You...
- Advice on managing debts.
- Protection from court enforcement, bankruptcy and loss of your home (provided you keep up mortgage/rent payments).
- The opportunity to freeze interest, fees and charges on your debt, from the date your DAS debt payment plan is approved.
- Breathing space and extra time to pay.
- An aftercare service should your circumstances change.
D.A.S. will help you if you can't find your own way out of a debt problem.
The scheme is often free for people paying debts under an approved debt payment programme (DPP). However, you should check this with your chosen money adviser, prior to entering into any agreement.
For the purposes of DAS, you must have more than one debt which they want to pay off.
Under DAS, a single regular payment is made to an approved payments distributor. If you keep to the agreed payments, your creditors cannot carry out enforcement action against you.
Likewise, creditors are unable to take enformcement action against a debtor who has intimated an intention to apply for a debt payment programme or has an application awaiting approval.
DAS also freezes interest, fees and charges on your debt, from the date your DAS debt payment plan is approved.
Using DAS successfully will show that you've learned valuable money management skills. You should be able to wipe the slate clean and start again.
Money Scotland is a Scottish Government founded website and is the home of the Debt Arrangement Scheme (DAS) and provides general information and advice about debt.
